  • Read through today's Tribune online and write a one page report about any major story that deals with something outside of the U.S. (The "air travel scare" story beginning on page 1 can be used...also stories on pp A16-A17) You can use the form below, or actually write out the report (best if typed!) and turn in a hard copy. CLASH of CIVILIZATIONS

  • Know these areas by name for a quiz next week...
  • Learn Samuel Huntington's paradigm to explain our current world order, the model he created to replace the Cold War model which is no longer valid.
  • You have one assignment, due at the end of the period.  Find an article in either Wall Street journal paper (Thurs or Fri) or today's Tribune (or online Tribune...) that either would GO ALONG with Huntington's model or that would GO AGAINST Huntington's model. 
  • Cut the story out, staple it to a page with your name(s) and an explanation of why this story is a proof of Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations" theory or why it it goes against Huntington's theory.  10 points, due today.

Trade Blocs

  • Get with a partner or work yourself...Do Google and Yahoo searches, etc. to find out how the current modern world could be divided into trade blocs.  This would look at the world divisions, etc. as ECONOMICally determined, not religiously and culturally as Huntington would predict. 
  • What are the world trade blocs?  Prepare a one page report, with maps or drawings for the end of class in the lab on Wed.  Worth: 20 points. 
  • Try to have one article from any issue of the New York Times (online) or Wall Street Journal to give evidence of your trade blocs.

  • On Nucor's website is a page entitled FREE AND FAIR TRADE. Find that page and read it...  On this page it says: "We need to remember that free trade does not mean “free-for-all trade.”  Write in the News Forum on IR's Moodle what they mean by this.  Read their statement, and then provide analysis of it on the IR class in Moodle.  10 points, due tomorrow.

National Character

  • Honest Abe, and cannot-tell-a-lie George Washington are huge role models for Americans, especially to kids growing up.  In China, Confucius has been the national hero for thousands of years.  Confucianism teaches honesty and character as a way of keeping a nation strong.
  • Read the article in the New York Times (200295079) on page 1 (and continued on page 16) about the fraud that is taking place all throughout Chinese society. Give 5 separate SPECIFIC examples of fraud or deceit written about in this story: (Worth 5 points, due by end of period, you CAN work with a partner...)


  • The Han Dynasty in China was a time of intellectual and cultural development.  The Han developed scholars who were honest and learned, and they became a model for future generations of Chinese. To this day some Chinese refer to themselves as "men of Han".  Respond to the prompt on Moodle about this fact and today's article. (5 points, due by end of period.)

  • Read about the Chinese snub of a Chinese winner of the Nobel Peace Prize (p A12, NYT).


  • On the Op-Ed page (A30) is a series of letters to the editor about how we should treat terrorists we have apprehended; should we give them a trial in a court of U.S. law, or should we detain them until the war on terror has subsided?  Read those short letters and then, weigh in with your opinion on Moodle...
