December 15, 2005

1. First, take the test linked below.  Some of the questions on this test will be on your Chapter 7 Test next Tuesday.  You may use notes on this test, but not the book.  It is based on the two sections you have read in class, 7.1 and 7.2    You can work with a partner.  Be sure to put your name(s) down, and for ID, write in your period number.

7.1-2 TEST

2. Your TASK:  You are an exploration team for Captain Pahl, who needs reports on some ancient middle American civilizations.

Get together 4 people (no more).  If you have fewer than 4, some people will have to do more than one task.  Each member of your group will contribute one part to your report.  The four parts you must divide are:

  • mathematician (Calendar/DatesMath/Number system, Hieroglyphs,
    Science)
  • historian (Art/music, Religious rituals/customs, history, folk tales)
  • anthropologist (pyramids, houses, tools, city/empire structure/layout)
  • archeologist (Farming/hunting, geography, trade/economy, culture/daily life)
  1. Explore either the Incan, Mayan, or Aztec civilization. Enter this civilization as an observer.
  2. Collect information, "take photos", and collect artifacts in your area.
  3. Get together with the other members of your team to present a unified report to Capt. Pahl, due tomorrow, Friday.
  4. List the part which each person had on a cover page which lists the civilization you picked. Each person should contribute at least one page to the report.  Have a preface explaining the report to Captain Pahl.

1. Be smart about your use of time in class so that your project tomorrow will get a lot of points!  Be sure to have information on 5 religions, some maps, a comparison chart of the religions, all presented in a nice way.  Photos, pictures and other extras like a table of contents and cover page would be nice additions.  I will try to keep the printers filled with paper! :-)  Be sure everybody's name is on the project.

2. Every group must turn in the test linked here. BE SURE TO PUT YOUR NAMES ON THE TEST AND TO INDICATE YOUR PERIOD IN THE ID NUMBER BLANK.

Nov. 17

You have studied about a famous turning point in history...when Rome moved from a republic to an empire...

You will be taking a quiz on this subject in a few minutes, based on your reading and notes on section 6.2 in the textbook.

First read through the following pages linked here, and then you will be given access to the quiz...

November 3, 2005

Don't forget that your Grecian vase design is due tomorrow, with

1. Evidence of Grecian influence (like by showing a photo of a Grecian work of pottery)
2. A meaning your row puts on the design (write it out)
3. The design itself. (like drawn on a piece of paper)

October 26, 2005

After you take the quiz, make sketches/take notes on Greek pottery art so you can help your team create your part of the class pottery piece. Remember you only have a small part of the vase, and can only use black paint.  You must have evidence that what you design and draw on the class vase has a relation to the actual heritage of Greece.  Be sure you have evidence that your design is based on an actual Greek piece of pottery.

Here are 7 periods of Greek pottery:

Look at the pottery on these pages also.  Remember you don't have much room for your design, and you can use black paint only.

Read about the Qin and Han Dynasties.

Make a chart comparing these two dynasties with these aspects of comparisons:

  • 2 Major Accomplishments
  • Construction projects
  • Names and styles of leaders
  • Type of Government
  • Time (years) of the Dynasty
  • (Pick another category which you choose

So your chart will look something like this:

Comparison Qin dynasty Han Dynasty
Names and styles of leaders
Construction projects
2 Major Accomplishments
Type of government
Time era
Topic of comparison which you pick

Wroth 10 points, due Friday, you may work with a partner if you like.

All three world history sections, 1st, 2nd and 6th periods, did poorly on our Unit 1 exam.  I felt that I went over everything that was on the test in class.  So I am not sure where the problem is.

So your assignment is to write at least one sentence about each answer you got wrong. Write a sentence or two which makes a statement that is true, so that someone who is not in our world history class could understand the sentence. For instance, if you checked an answer that said there are no pyramids in Egypt, and the correct answer is that there ARE pyramids in Egypt, then write a sentence like this: (Be sure to write the number of the problem):

"43. There were many pyramids in ancient Egypt."

Write neat, be clear. This is due at the beginning of class Friday and is worth 10 points.  If you work with a partner, you must be sure that all the wrong answers on both of your exams appear on the work that you turn in.

Sept. 29, 2005

How was the Pyramid built?

Do some web research on how the Great Pyramid was built.  Some links are listed below, but you can also find others by doing your own searches.  You can work alone, with a partner, or in a group of three.

Turn in a report on your findings.   The report should:

  • be at least one page long.
  • list the sources where you got your information.
  • make reference to alternative theories

Worth 10 points.  Due: Tomorrow, Friday
Extra Credit: add a section on who built the Great Pyramid and why.

Today is the first day of Autumn.  This is a reminder that Chicago is in a part of the world where the four seasons are distinct.  When I spent a year in the Dominican Republic I learned to really appreciate the change of seasons.  In that country everyday was the same: warm and sunny, except for some morning showers.  I sometimes missed the fresh breezes of spring, the snow of winter, and the crisp chill of autumn.

In your study of the Aryan (India) and Shang (China) civilizations you read that their gods were closely associated with the natural order.  Ancient peoples were generally closet to nature than we are.  Why is that?

Think about that with other members of the group you will need to get together for this assignment. Get in a group of at least two (you and someone else) or a group of up to...as big as you want it (the whole class!, for instance...).

Talk about why nature was generally more important to the ancients than to us today.  Your assignment is to get something ready to present to the class tomorrow for a minute or two that gives the rest of the class an idea of how the Shang (ancient China) and Aryan (ancient India) civilizations were close to nature. Maybe you can do a role play of the people honoring the god.  Enact a religious ceremony.  Read a vedic hymn and dance to it.  Bring offerings to the god.... Do a PowerPoint or draw a poster...You get the idea!  Do a little research and see what you can come up with.  Remember, one to two minutes tomorrow...

Put the names of the people in your group on a paper, and a sentence description of what you are doing to be handed in tomorrow when you do it...

This is a group assignment, worth 10 points. You must work with at least one other person.  Nobody works alone on this, without permission from Mr. Pahl.  You can have up to 4 people in your group. Turn in one assignment, everybody in the group gets the same grade.

The ancient Hebrew civilization gave the world the Ten Commandments, and monotheism -- the belief that there is only one God. It is said that Western civilization, of which the United States is a part, has its basis in Judeo-Christian values and ideals. Use the links below to read about Hebrew and Jewish civilization and then make a chart in which you show how the Hebrew-Jewish values can be seen in American history and/or in today's society. The chart will look something like this: (Remember charts have titles and column headings...;-)

Tracing Hebrew Heritage to Western Civilization

Hebrew Value, Law or Ideal Evidence of this now in America (or the West) now

ANCIENT WORLDVIEWS:  Like Mine?

Assignment worth 10 points, due Friday morning.  You can work with 1 partner if you like.

Assignment.  Draw a chart with two columns.  In the left column, take a quote from at least three of the sources linked below.  Put that quote (long or short) in the left column. Across from it, in the right column, comment on how that quote is like or unlike your world view today.  How similar or different is the worldview from the ancient source from your worldview today?  Be sure to put a title on the writing you turn in, and be sure to put headings above each column, like this:

Quote from ancient source....... Your comment on how it compares to your worldview

Yesterday you wrote about what you thought some of the characteristics of civilization were.  That is your assignment again today, but this time you will do research before you answer.  Get with a partner (you must work in groups of exactly two, unless you get Mr. Pahl's permission otherwise.)  Research and take notes on the 5 links below.  Then make a chart or do a short writing (1-2 pages) on what the marks/characteristics of a civilization are.   Put a footnote/number after each one of your reasons to indicate from which one of the sources below you took it.  Every one of your characteristics must have a reference number after it.  Take at least one characteristic from each one of the references below.  This assignment is due at the end of the period, but I will also take it first thing tomorrow, (Fri.) morning.  But try to get it done today!
