Work with a partner and draw a Venn Diagram, with the
three interlocking circles being Catholicism, Lutheranism,
and Calvinism. Label each of the sections formed with
a letter or number, and then add as many items as you can
for each letter or number. This Venn diagram is notebook assignment #3, so
even though you are working with a partner, you must each
get the Venn Diagram in your own notebooks.

Renaissance, Reformation, and Scientific
Revolution
The Age of Absolutism. In sections 1, 2 and 3 of
chapter 17, you read about the growth of royal power in Spain,
France and England. This period is called the Age of Absolutism
because it was a time when kings gained immense power through
divine right theory,
the influx of wealth into Europe from the New World, and
the decline of the power of nobles.
Absolute monarchy. In Spain and France, the power of the
King was largely unchecked. Louis XIV called himself the
Sun King. "I am the state" he boasted. Philip was an
absolute monarch in Spain.
But in England a different
tradition developed that put a check on the power of any monarch
who tried to gain absolute power. This check was the
power of Parliament, an assembly representing the people.
Even though Stuart kings often dissolved Parliament... (cont'd)
Peter the Great. Design a chart in the lab
today, with no writing (just the FORM for the chart...) in which you
will compare the actions of 4 kings: From Spain (Philip II),
France (Louis XIV), England (Charles I) and Russia (Peter
the Great). Compare these 4 kings on just two
things...what they did to increase their power and what
forces were working against their having absolute power.
Every student must generate their own chart. You will use
these in class tomorrow so you can fill in by hand the
various parts of the chart. (So bring your book to class
tomorrow!)
Make at least one post to the Moodle...your job
is to add something a king can do to centralize, strengthen
or extend his power. You can either add something, or
respond to something someone else has added (to agree or
disagree with them.)

not...
Notebook assignment number 8. The five
governments/phases of the French Revolution. This is worth
50 points. Two (2) people can work on it together (not
