PAY ATTENTION!

You are going to go to a website and do stuff...pay attention!

The password when you are requested for it is the number 1. You will be told what to do when you get there.  But BE QUIET.  You will penalized for talking. Go to http://writeboard.com/af8c9fb02fd634c0e  (Click on it!)

Wed 8/30 Mr. Pahl talked yesterday about how the human race made this jump from hunter and gatherers to farmers and herders and then finally to organizers of very civilized societies.  In your group, write out 5 steps that humans would have to go through to go from farmers to a society like Egypt's which built incredible pyramids.   Boards:   Ask Mr. Pahl for your group's password.

Fri 9/8 There are two assignments for your group to do in the lab today.

1. The first is to write out on your writeboard how you think the great pyramid was built.  Groups 1     2     3    4     5     6     7      (you might want to erase your writeboard clean to start this project...)

Look for theories on the web...

2. Fill in the chart below, by groups, and send to Mr. Pahl.  One chart is to be sent for each group.

What we did in class with our chair-building competition yesterday

What idea this gives about what the
Egyptians might have done to get
the Pyramids built

1.  Mr. Pahl masterminded the class in a competitive project. The project never would have happened without his initiative and power in the class.

2.  It took a triscuit to free up a block (chair)
3. Two groups competed (for added incentive) to get a chair pyramid built
4. The wizards directed others in what to do.
5. Not everyone was involved in constructing the chair pyramid.  Some students asserted themselves more in building the chair-pyramid than others.
6. Several attempts to get the chairs to touch the ceiling did not work...alternative arrangements had to be found.
7. Students did not rebel at this assignment.  The groups worked together with good attitude to try and get the chair pyramids built.
8. The chair-pyramid was built.  There is evidence!

Thu 9/14 The "air shaft" in the Queen's Chamber of the Great Pyramid. What has been found out about this air shaft?  Your group has the task this period of reading through the material on the following websites.  You will have a group test tomorrow on the information that is on these sites.  So divide up your tasks and learn this information!

Tues 9/19 Egyptian Religion. Get your group together. Read page 27, "A Fateful Test" about Osiris and the Egyptian view of judgment.  Pay careful attention to the animals and symbols...This is a solemn ceremony, a very sacred religious belief.  Each group will make presentations in class tomorrow, attempting to dramatize this belief.  Your main goal is to engage the class as SERIOUSLY as you can.  The more laughing that takes place by the class, the lower your score.  You must engage your audience and be smart, creative, and savvy as to how you will try to create an atmosphere of solemnity among your classmates. Plan for a skit between 2 and 7 minutes long. Length is not as important as quality.  The following things will help your grade (worth: 20 points):

Planning doodle space, to help you think of what to do...

ITEMS that will HELP GRADE

  Seriousness (already said above)
  Creativity
  Props, pictures, costuming
  Drama, Dialogue and scripting.

Thu 9/28 TEST tomorrow. Some of the questions will be taken from the following study guide:

Chapter 2

The test, as you remember, will also include:

  • The eight characteristics of a civilization
  • Notes from Mr. Pahl  yesterday
  • The beginning of each section in Chapter 2 starts with “Guide for Reading” questions.
  • Chap 2 vocab

Wed 10/4 Hebrew History Project.  Mr. Pahl taught the outline of Hebrew history yesterday.  Your task as a group is to prepare a project, due at the end of the period tomorrow (Thursday)(worth: 20 points), that illustrates graphically the story of the Hebrews from Abraham through the Babylonian captivity. Pretend that your intended audience for this project is a 5th grade class and plan accordingly.
  • Meet as a group and decide what type of project you would like to do.  Then divide up assignments so that you each bring to class tomorrow the stuff necessary to make your project a winner.  There will be basic art supplies in the room.

IDEAS for projects:

  • Webpage. If enough of you are web savvy you could have a web display of this history. The website would have to finished by Friday evening.  You would send the URL to Mr. Pahl by then.   Use your class time to write the wording for different pages in the web, and you MUST turn in a written plan for the website by the end of the period Thursday.
  • Booklet.  Each person does a page or two and one person wraps up the details with cover, table of contents, etc.
  • Large Display Board.  Use maps, drawings and various reports, all linked together on a project board, taking the viewer through the stages of development of the Hebrews.
  • PowerPoint.  Make a PowerPoint presentation that has color and maps and takes the viewer through the story of the Hebrews.
  • Other?  Be creative...

Thu 10/12 Indus Valley Civilization.   Your talented group of researchers is hot on the trail of the "Case of the Mysterious Vanishing Indus."

Each member of your group has a part to play.  There is the Thinker, the Archaeologist, the Adventurer, the Detective, and the Administrator. If there are only 4 people in your group, somebody will have to double up!

Your talented crew must present a report to Commander Pahl tomorrow about the mystery of the Indus Valley civilization. What happened?  Get your group together, divide up responsibilities, and GET YOUR REPORT TO THE COMMANDER! Worth 20 pts.

Group Member Responsibility
Thinker Think. Read this account of the script used in the Indus Valley, and about its possible connection to Easter Island (see Mr. Pahl) and draw whatever connections you can about the collapse of the Indus Valley Civilization.
Archaeologist Read the article linked to this question: Was there an Aryan invasion at the time of the fall of the Indus Valley civilization?
Yesterday Mr. Pahl said that the Aryans invaded the Indus Valley near the time of its collapse.  Is that what this article says? What theory does the archeology suggest for the collapse of the Indus Valley civilization?
Adventurer As an adventurer, you must add something to the report by ... adventuring.   Surf the net and find out something...adventurous...about the disappearance of the Indus Valley ... then give it to your administrator so Commander Pahl will be pleased! :-)
Detective Some new finds off the coast of India may force new theories to reconsider what happened to the Indus Valley society...What does the author of this link have to say on this matter? Be sure to look at some of the links he gives, including these:  Link 1   Link 2   Link 3
Administrator Your job is to help all the members accomplish their task, and to be sure that Commander Pahl gets a nice looking report.  Cover, table of contents, unified design and content, make a convincing case.  You've got to sell the Commander on your goods.

Tues 10/17 You have studied about the Indus Valley ancient civilization, along the Indus River in India.  Eventually the Aryans who had settled in the Indus Valley moved east toward the Ganges River and settled there.

Work with a partner. Use the online textbook, or your own textbook:

Book login   larrypahl   pahls246

You and your partner should look through Chapter 3 section 2 in the book and answer the questions below.  Because I don't think many students really read these lab assignment directions I put in here I am offering extra credit to any group (get your names on the message) that sends me a message during the period, using the message link on my contact page. (Don't tell anybody else about this if you do read this.)

Tues 10/24
  • You think the Egyptian crocodile stories are only in world history books?  How about yesterday's Daily Herald?
  • Here is a link to your Study Guide for questions that will be on the Unit 1 test. Get with a partner and go through these to prepare for similar questions which will be on the test Thursday.

Wed 11/1 Buddy search.  Meet with your group.  You must turn in, at the end of the period, the answers to all the questions asked in the linked webquest.    Make sure what you turn into Guru Pahl is neat, creative and offers the best answers.

Thur 11/9 High Five Thursday.   History proceeds from generation to generation, father to son, mother to daughter.  The Emporer's Club shows us looks at at least four father-son pairs:
  1. Mr. Hundert and his father who was a hard driving, successful author
  2. Sedgwick Bell and his father who was a hard driving senator
  3. Sedgwick Bell and his son who overhears his talk with Mr. Hundert in the bathroom
  4. Martin, who got bumped out of the Mr. Julius Caesar contest, and his son who ended up in Mr. Hundert's class at St. Benedicts.

Write a short essay, or a short comparison chart, in which you talk about at least three of these father-son relationships and how they effected the world around them...in other words, how they made World History.

Tue 11/14

PowerPoint!

Wed 11/22 PowerPoint... and Photostory...

Thu 11/30 Who were the Minoans?  Was King Minos real or legendary?  What happened to their advanced civilization?

Do some web research and write a one page, computer generated report about the Minoans.  What is known for sure, what is probably myth or legend, and where did they go?  Why don't they continue to have a powerful, advanced civilization in our day?

Explain if you think that the legends about King Minos could be based on actual events which just became exaggerated in later generations. You can work with one partner. (Not two...)  Worth 10 points.

Wed 12/6
  • Here is a PowerPoint quiz you should learn the answers to for the test on Friday...(it's taken from Chap. 5, Section 3.)
  • Here is an online quiz which has questions that will appear on the test on Friday

Tues 12/12
TAKE NOTES ON 6.1 In class yesterday, Mr. Pahl talked about taking notes.  Use that skill today by taking notes on Chapter 6, section 1.  Use the Cornell note-taking system. Here is another link to view the Cornell system... This will be notebook assignment #11.  You can use the online textbook (Book login   larrypahl   history), or your textbook. If you computer generate your notes you can attach them to your notebook.

Tues 12/19
Take the online test on Chapter 6
, the Roman Empire. No partners, everyone must take their own test.  You can use notes on the test.
