SMART MOUTH

Read about some hot-button First Amendment issues, most of them dealing with the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause, and the idea of separation of church and state.

  • 1st and 4th hour students.  Read through the stories of at least 5 of the 13 "hot-button" cases linked above, and then comment on them in the class Moodle. Pick the number of the topic you are commenting on, and say who you side with, and why. This is a two day assignment and you are expected to comment on at least 4 of the stories, so you should make at least 4 separate posts, stating your opinion (which side you are on and why) on each one.
  • 1st period students.  After you are done with your 4 posts about these hot-button stories, you must prepare a few questions to ask Michael Kelly, the President of Bartlett, who will be in class on Friday...  Do some research on issues or Bartlett, or else enterprise some questions you would really like answered about Bartlett and how it is run, etc. Keep a copy of your questions so you can ask Mr. Kelly on Friday, and turn your questions into Mr. Pahl here:

  • 5th Period students going on the field trip, write out two questions you could ask at the SmartMouth debate we will be attending at the Chicago Cultural Center. Draw these two questions from the hot button issues linked above. There will be two opposing speakers debating these issues.  Keep a copy of the two questions so you can actually have them with you when we are downtown, so you can ask them!

5th Period, turn in your two questions here.  Tell me in each one which issue it deals with, if it is not obvious from your question...:

Wed. Jan. 6

  • Here is a study guide meant to help you on the Target test...it's the stuff we have studied this semester...Note: This is the best study guide you can use for that test, so really study it if you want to do well on that test! :-)
  • Here is the link to the study guide for the final that I gave you in class...
