test. Hopefully you remember your name and password...!
You can take this assessment with a partner if you
want (no groups of 3, please!). So go
make some decisions.
You must individually take this quiz-game by Friday.
Mr. Pahl will check your score after that. Whatever
grade you have recorded by Friday is what you will get as a
score. The game offers opportunity for Extra
Credit if you do well.
The game is called "Crack the Code" and it is listed
in the table of contents of chapter 3 in your online
textbook.
Please read section 3.3 in the online textbook today,
and read section 3.4 for tomorrow. There will be a
test on the sections your have read in Chapter 3, plus what
Mr. Pahl lectures about tomorrow, Thursday (notebook
assignment 4).

Tests. There are 3
tests on this page. Make sure you take all three of them and
write your results in notebook assignment #7, along with a
paragraph in which you assess these results with what you
know about your own views and come to a determination of
whether you are liberal or conservative.

think Truth in Advertising laws should apply to
political ads.

Go to
TCI login and do the Primary Source Investigation
activity at the end of Chapter 10.
Read about how the Electoral College actually elects
our President in section 10.4. Write a one page
report explaining how the Electoral College works, and
explain the 3 proposals listed in the book as to how the
Electoral College could be amended. Which one do you think
is best, and why? 10 points, due tomorrow, Thursday.
Read sections 10.5 and 10.6 in the
online (or hard cover) book. There will be a test on
Friday on Chapters 9 and 10.
Now weigh in on both of these topics. Make at least one
post in each thread, either responding to the prompt or
responding to another student (10 points).

The First Amendment
In our mock trials you must be prepared either as an
Associate Counsel, or a Supreme Court Judge. For the remaining 3
trials each Supreme Court Justice and each Counsel must
prepare a brief about the case they are involved with, and
turn it into at the conclusion of the trial.
Associate Counsels, your brief must contain:
The name of the case and which of the two parties in the
case you represent
The question before the Court
Very plainly, how you are answering the question for the
best benefit of your client
The strongest appeal to the Court that you can make on
behalf of your client. What facts are important for the
Court to know for your client to win?
Know which of the precedents (left column) support the
Petitioner and which of the precedents support the
Respondent.
1st and 4th hour students. Read through the
stories of at least 5 of the 13 "hot-button" cases linked
above, and then comment on them in the class Moodle. Pick the
number of the topic you are commenting on, and say who you side
with, and why. This is a two day assignment and you are
expected to comment on at least 4 of the stories, so you
should make at least 4 separate posts, stating your opinion
(which side you are on and why) on each one.
1st period students. After you are done
with your 4 posts about these hot-button stories, you must
prepare a few questions to ask Michael Kelly, the President
of Bartlett, who will be in class on Friday... Do some
research on issues or Bartlett, or else enterprise some
questions you would really like answered about Bartlett and
how it is run, etc. Keep a copy of your questions so you can
ask Mr. Kelly on Friday, and turn your questions into Mr.
Pahl here:
5th Period students going on the field trip, write out two
questions you could ask at the SmartMouth debate we will be
attending at the Chicago Cultural Center. Draw these two
questions from the hot button issues linked above. There will be two
opposing speakers debating these issues. Keep a copy
of the two questions so you can actually have them with you when
we are downtown, so you can ask them!

Wow, it just hit me as I was putting together this lab that this
is my last lab session with you as a class, so if you're up to
it, feedback to me a little here:
During the final exam period, you will be taking both
the Civics final and the 2nd quarter target test. On
that test will be the required Civics vocabulary
words...Study those
