Yesterday Mr. Pahl talked about capitalism, socialism
and communism, three leading economic systems.
Look at this
Wikipedia article about economic systems. You
will see that it characterizes some systems as
"left-wing" and some as "right-wing." Using that
information answer the two questions below:
1. Which of these three systems
would go on this, the "left-wing" side?
Capitalism?
Socialism?
Communism?
Beanie Baby "Lefty"
(The donkey is used to symbolize the Democratic Party)
Beanie Baby "Righty"
(The elephant is used to symbolize the Republic Party)
2. Which of these three systems would
go on this, the "right-wing" side?
Finish your worksheet on the Establishment and
Free Exercise cases if you have not done that yet.
You can use the book or online resources (ie.,
www.google.com)
Take the quiz
on Chapter 13, sections 1 and 2. You
CAN use your chart of cases (which is due at the end
of the period) for this quiz. Use the email
field to write in the period you have civics.
Read these few points from James Madison'sMemorial and Remonstrance.
Then do the assignment below. (You can work in partners on this)
First day of
Spring, 2007
Lefty and Righty: Is your plan liberal or conservative?
... or both? What do you get if you cross lefty with
righty?
With your group, do research on proposals for
immigration policy in the United States. You must draw parts
of at least three of the bills linked below...
Decide if your plan is liberal, conservative,
or
moderate, and label it as such...Your plan should
probably center on about 5 main "planks."
For instance, you could have positions on things like:
How many people to let in yearly (many or few)
WHICH people to let in (Russians, not Mexicans)
What to do with illegal aliens (Send them back, jail
them, fine employers who employ them, or else give them some
kind of amnesty)
Set up a workers' visa program so people could come to
the US: for a period of time to work
Denying -- or allowing -- benefits to illegal aliens?
Require English for aliens?
On Friday, you will present, orally and in writing, your
plan for immigration rules in the U.S. You may want to
use a PowerPoint, with graphics, etc. to present your bill.
