Civics NOTEBOOK Assignments. 

Make sure you have all of these in your notebook,.nu              ered and neat! :-)

 1. Chapter 1, three part assignment:

  1. Write out the vocab words from chapter 1, define them, and draw a picture for each.

  2. Draw the chart on p. 8 into your notebook (Aristotle's classification of governments)

  3. Summarize each one of the Games People Play from section 1.5

2. From chapter 1, section 2, describe each of the following means which have been used to justify political legitimacy:
  • The mandate of Heaven
  • The divine right of kings
  • Social-contract theory.

From chapter 1, section 3, explain what the two building blocks of all governments are, and why they are necessary

3. Know your Rights!  Explain what the Supreme Court ruled in each one of these cases, and then tell whether or not you agree with it, and WHY.
  • TINKER v. DES MOINES.
  • KENT v US.
  • SANTA FE v. JANE DOE.
  • SAFFORD UNIFIED v. APRIL REDDING.
4. Write out the vocabulary from Chapter 2, with definitions, and draw a picture for each word.
5. IN A CHART summarize the kinds of governments in each stage of history (from chapter 2, section 2).Be sure to use the bold words in your summaries:
  • Ancient
  • Greece/Rome (Classical)
  • Middle Ages
  • Age of Revolutions. 
6. Make a chart summarizing each one of the 7 forms of government in the world today. (From Chapter 2) At the end of the chart explain in words the main difference between parliamentary democracy and presidential democracy.
7. Summarize the article "Too Dumb for Complex Texts" and then write a short honest self assessment of your own ability to read complex texts.
8. From section 2.5, create a chart which compares the 3 major economic systems, traditional, market and command. You can basically use the chart on page 34, but you will have to add a column for a traditional economy.
9. Take notes (Sept. 13, 2011) on Mr. Pahl's Review for the chapter 1 - chapter 2 test.
10 Draw your version of the timeline on pp.42-43. Be sure the 7 concepts and where they arose are on the timeline. Be sure to have a title...Make the chart graphic!

11. SUMMARIZE the article "Floored by Debt."  Then write a personal statement about where you stand on the issue of going into debt for college.
12. Draw the timeline about Civil Rights on pp.124-125 in your book. Make it vertical instead of horizontal.

Also, make a diagram in which you list the 6 steps to becoming a U.S. citizen through the naturalization process (p.128) 

Also, define these words and draw a small picture for each:

  1. lawful permanent resident
  2. resident alien
  3. undocumented immigrant (also called illegal alien)
  4. naturalization
  5. green card
13. Take Cornell notes on 7.4 "Political Culture in the United States.", pages 129-133.
14. Draw a chart like the one on page 161 in your book. List how each one of the following forces has SPECIFICALLY HAD AN EFFECT ON YOUR BELIEFS:
  • Ethnicity.
  • News Media.
  • Family.
  • School.
  • Religion.
  • Peer groups.
  • Your own individual insights.
15. Design a timeline, drawing from Chapter 10, section 2, and the timeline on pages 178-179. The timeline should show how the right to vote (suffrage) has grown over the years in America.
16. Take the tests on the hawkclub link on the Oct. 19 lab page.  Record the results of each test. Do they say you are more liberal or conservative? Then be sure to have a concluding paragraph where you evaluate these test results.  Do they seem accurate to you?   Are you more liberal or conservative?
17. Do Cornell Notes for section 10.4 "Campaigning in General Elections".  NOTE: Only do the notes for words in bold type (green or black).
18. Do Cornell Notes for section 10:5 "Financing Election Campaigns" (pp. 191-194).  NOTE: These Cornell Notes can be used on the test you will have on Chapter 10 on Wed., Oct. 26.
19. Draw a graphic representation of the 3 branches of the US government.

20. Creatively combine the charts about the Presidency on pages 246, 251 and 253 into one graphic chart, the summarizes the basic information on those charts.
